BMW recalls more than 150,000 cars for fuel-pump fix
BMW has recalled more than 150,000 vehicles in the US due to fuel-pump problems.
According to an AFP report, the company said it had notified the US Environmental Protection Agency of a voluntary recall of about 130,000 vehicles built from 2007 to 2010.
In addition approximately 21,000 X5s built between 2007 to 2010 have also been called in for the same problem that could lead to engine failure.
BMW said it had also notified the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it would voluntarily recall the X5 SUVs.
Affected vehicles would either receive a new fuel pump or updated software, the auto company said.
The X5 pumps would be replaced, BMW said.
In the meantime, a spokesman for BMW SA said, however, that the “premature failure” of the fuel pumps on US-market BMW models was caused by the high ethanol content of US fuel and thus would not affect BMW models in South Africa.
