Two top clashes highlight daCosta Cup today
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Two top of the group clashes between winners from Wednesday’s first set of games in the Inter-Zone round of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition will highlight today’s set of 11 games, weather permitting.
Group One leaders Marcus Garvey Technical and St James High will meet at Jarrett Park in the second game of a double header, while Garvey Maceo High and Titchfield High will meet in a Group Six game at Jamalco, starting at 1:00 pm.
Meanwhile, two other schools who won on Wednesday will be seeking a second win today to bolster their chances of advancing to the quarter-finals, while defending champions St Elizabeth Technical will go after their first win after being held scoreless by Spalding on Wednesday.
Today’s meeting between St James High and Marcus Garvey will be the first between the two schools at this level and could decide the winners of the group.
Marcus Garvey scored a big 3-0 win over St Mary High on Wednesday, while St James High had to rely on their National Under-20 representatives Allan Ottey and Ricardo Morris to lead them to a 2-1 win over Frome at Frome.
St James will have the ‘home field’ advantage, as the St Ann school will seek their first win at Jarrett Park.
Both Garvey Maceo and Titchfield struggled to advance from their respective first-round zones, but responded with 1-0 wins on Wednesday over more fancied opponents.
Garvey Maceo beat Ben Francis KO finalists Paul Bogle High, while Titchfield surprised high-flying Old Harbour to set up a crucial clash today.
If they are to continue their defence of the daCosta Cup, holders STETHS must win today when they take on group leaders Clarendon College at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex.
Wednesday’s draw snapped a nine-game win streak for the Andrew Edwards-coached STETHS team, including three in the Ben Francis KO.
The home team will be under pressure today to win as anything less could mean the end of their campaign.
Meanwhile, former champions Glenmuir High and Rusea’s High will seek their second win in the round today.
Glenmuir High take on Buff Bay at Jamalco, while Rusea’s and St Mary Technical meet at Jarrett Park.
