Have a fatality free week urges RSU
FIVE people were killed in traffic collisions over the last week, pushing the island’s road-death toll to 255 from 235 fatal crashes since January.
Over the same period last year 292 people were killed in 257 fatal collisions.
As the countdown continues in keeping traffic deaths below 300, director of the Road Safety Unit in the transport ministry, Kenute Hare, yesterday appealed for at least one week without traffic fatalities.
“We have 43 days to go in the year. Let us try for a fatality free week,” he declared.
Hare called on the police to step up spot checks especially in known accident-prone areas and at the same time urged revellers over the coming holiday season to have a designated driver.
“There is still a window of opportunity to bring fatalities below 300, so we need to cover all areas,” he commented.
Since 2008 when the National Road Safety Council established its Under-300 campaign traffic deaths have repeatedly surpassed the figure.
Last year 347 people were killed in traffic crashes while 343 people were killed in 2008.
