Queen’s, St Hugh’s through to netball semis
DEFENDING champions The Queen’s School and St Hugh’s are the first two teams to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2010 ISSA/Digicel Urban Area High Schoolgirls Junior and Senior Netball Leagues, respectively, after recording wins in the penultimate round at the Leila Robinson Courts on Thursday.
With one round remaining to be played Monday, the rush for second place qualifiers for the semi-finals will be on in both Group One and Two of the Junior and Senior Leagues, respectively.
Queen’s, who are also the defending All-Island Junior League champions, had things easy against opponents Meadowbrook High with 30-20 win.
Queen’s Seniors also came out easy winners over St Andrew Technical High (STATHS), 28-22, to maintain their winning streak which puts atop Group One. They will next play Camperdown in their last game of the second round.
Meanwhile, the Phillip St Marie-coached St Hugh’s also maintained their unbeaten run with a 25-12 win over Excelsior, who were losing their second game from four outings in the second round.
St Catherine High, coached by Joan Walker, has also maintained their unbeaten run by turning back Wolmer’s Girls 22-17.
In Monday’s final round, St Hugh’s and St Catherine will challenge each other in the top-of-the-table showdown in Group Two of the Juniors to determine who will finish at the top of the standings.
The Christopher Smart-coached Bridgeport High have also maintained their winning run in Group Two of the Seniors by defeating Wolmer’s Girls 35-21.
Bridgeport and St Hugh’s will square off against each other to determine who will top Group Two of the Senior League as both schools are through to the semi-finals as they have defeated all the teams in their group.
Meanwhile, the Jennifer Brown-coached St Andrew High should finish second behind Queen’s who handed them their only defeat of the season in Group One of the Seniors, a close 19-14 scoreline.
In other Senior League matches, Camperdown defeated Vauxhall 35-15, former champions Tarrant High got the better of Alpha Academy 29-24.
St Andrew High defeated Haile Selassie High 29-19 and should finish second behind defending Junior League champions Queen’s to advance into the semi-finals.
Results of other games played in the Junior League: Camperdown High defeated Vauxhall High 27-16 and Mona High outscored Hydel High 22-13.
