Fresh, Fab ‘n’ Festive – part 1

Get the Look

There are a number of festive occasions on the horizon for the holiday season, and we know you want to look gorgeous for every occasion.

Our Get The Look team hit the streets recently, scouting fashionable fabellas to show you some on-trend ways to look fresh, fab and festive this Christmas. Stay tuned for next week’s follow-up!

Krystian Fernando’s fresh-faced look, featuring sleek tresses — complete with brow-grazing bangs, minimal make-up and red lips caught our lens at the Chain of Hope charity event on Saturday last. Here are some of the reasons her look is a definite win.

o A dazzling smile – not only does it illuminate the face, making you look younger, happier and more approachable, it also makes you look and feel more confident. Invest in a good whitening toothpaste and get your smile on this Christmas. It’s a perfectly inexpensive way to spice up your look for the season, wouldn’t you agree?

o On-trend red lips – though women around the globe have favoured red lipstick for decades, the look has become even more popular over the last few seasons. Wear it with minimal make-up as seen on Krystian for instant glamour.

o Flawless, dewy skin – Want a healthy, youthful glow? Flawless skin is the way to go… but don’t worry fashionistas, if you don’t have it, you can always fake it. A little concealer in the right places and a foundation with good coverage can work wonders. You can also try a bronzer for that enviably youthful radiance.

o Lush lashes – everyone loves gorgeous lashes – the more lengthy and voluminous, the better. Play up yours with ‘falsies’, eyelash curlers or even lash growers for a more sensuous, doe-eyed look Christmas. An easy and equally effective way is to apply 2-3 coats of good volumising mascara.

We spotted Ruth Levy at a wedding last weekend, sporting an elegant chignon and ultra-feminine make-up for an on-point sultry-meets-sweet appeal. Here’s why we love it.

o Full, bold brows – Gone are the days of those unsightly, over-tweezed, pencil-thin eyebrows. Thanks to recent runway trends and world-famous Hollywood stars, it is all about embracing full, bold brows. The trick is to tweeze only the unruly hairs, comb through your brows and if necessary, swipe a dab of wax across them for understated elegance. You may also pencil them in (lightly, please) with a brow pencil or filler close to the colour of your hair.

o Soft, natural lips – Ruth also embraced another of-the-moment trend with her soft lips. Dark lipstick is so out, ladies – so put away the black or dark brown lipsticks and liners this season. If you like dark, opt for a shade of plum instead. Try bold red, flirty pink or simply keep it soft and natural with a flesh-toned lipgloss à la Ruth Levy.

o A healthy glow – we already told you how to fake flawless skin if you’re not quite there yet. So conceal and bronze away (bearing in mind, of course, that too much bronze makes you look orange and unnatural). Most importantly, drink lots of water and eat fruits and vegetables to hydrate your skin. Find a good sunscreen for daytime and moisturiser for night-time, and you can even use an anti-aging cream if necessary. Take care of your skin and it will glow naturally.

o Sultry eyes – While Ruth pulls off the dark smoky eye easily, bear in mind that this exact look does not complement everyone. Learn how to tweak the look with the right colours for your skin. Earthy, fruity tones complement all skin types, and for darker shades, you can try plum or chocolate.

Tip: Too-dark shadows eg black and navy are usually a bit too heavy for daytime, as are heavily lined lids. Try smudging your eyeliner, instead of drawing a thick line, or wearing it on your upper eyelids only for a less dramatic effect. And please, do avoid simply wearing silver eyeshadow.
