My Kingston — Rockmond Dunbar
What was your first impression of Kingston?
My first impression was that it reminded me a lot of West Africa, Gambia in particular.
Has it changed? If so, why?
Yes, it has changed because I have experienced more of the culture, the people and seen the talent that’s here. I’ve been exposed to so much more of the nightlife, the cuisine and day-to-day living. I’ve seen beyond the surface.
What would you do if you were mayor (of Kingston) for a day?
I would force all the taxi drivers to take driving lessons (lol), then I would encourage tax breaks and benefits for local business to encourage further developments for small/medium business owners and growth from within vs looking externally.
Share with us the title of the last book you read.
I just re-read Conscious Loving by Kathlyn Hendricks because it’s a great tool on how to have a healthy relationship.
What’s your middle name?
I actually don’t have any — blame my parents.
And the last bit of music that stirred your soul?
Unconditional Love by Jah Cure.
What was your last bit of retail therapy?
I just moved and went out to furnish my new place, so from sheets to eight-foot Bird of Paradise plants…. I went crazy! (lol)
Which cologne are you currently splashing?
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue for men.
What’s your preferred beverage?
Cafe Patron, the drink of champions.
What was your most memorable meal in Kingston?
Dinner at the Spanish Court hotel was absolutely delicious – I’d go back again and again.
What are your current projects?
I continue to produce and direct, and in fact I’m hoping to develop a project involving Jamaica called The Adventures of Rock Duro which will span three countries (Gambia, USA and Jamaica), and of course I am also still acting and have a series currently airing on FX (Wednesday’s at 10:00pm – shameless tune-in message) called Terriers, and had guest appearances on Private Practice and The Defenders last month.
What upsets you?
Mean, impatient, judgemental and greedy people.
Share your favourite spots on the island.
Wow, I have so many. In Negril I love Tensing Pen, the beach, drinks by Margaritaville and eating lunch at Push Cart on West End Rd. In Reading you must stop by Pimentos and try their Jerk Sausage. In Kingston I love The Spa at Strawberry Hill, Susie’s on a Monday Night and Fiction on a Wednesday, and of course Scotchies every day. My next trip I am checking out both Portland and the South Coast, so I’ll have a few more recommendations for you by then.
Share some places in your Black Book.
Travel is one of my favourite things so here are a few places I love: 10,000 Waves Spa in Santa Fe, New Mexico, The Ritz Carlton in Paris, The CoCo Ocean in The Gambia and of course in my hometown check out Cha Cha Cha on Melrose.
What’s your advice to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
Don’t stay stuck in your hotel, get out and enjoy this vibrant city and all it has to offer. Where else can you go out to grab a drink and meet Beenie Man, Beres Hammond, Bounty Killer & Elephant Man all in one place and on the same night?
What’s your philosophy?
Be comfortable in your own skin.
