Train our people
Dear Editor,
I am sure the army could utilise its own skills and resources to repair Newcastle. I cannot imagine any trained army force with an engineering department needing help with building restoration. This epitomises how we approach problem solving, including science and technology, in every sector of our society, whether it’s in politics, education, crime fighting, etc.
Science and technology is not a mystery or a blessing bestowed only on Caucasians. It is culturally developed and is the tool for the curious and those who love to solve problems.
We are a people always overwhelmed by problems. We also have this history of creating problems with our rebellious and contentious nature. Let us change course by including and training students at all levels of our education system presenting them with problems and asking them to come up with solutions. Problem solving is cultural. We need to understand and train our people to think that all solutions start in the mind and end in a practical way. That to me is the main use of science and technology.
