KSA JAS to honour Weeville Gordon, Carmen Stewart
Dear Editor,
One week before the Rev Canon Weeville McCurbin Gordon, former Custos of Kingston passed on, the Kingston and St Andrew chapter of the Jamaica Agricultural Society passed a motion to recognise the tremendous contribution of both Custos Canon Weeville Gordon and Custos of St Andrew the Rev Bishop Carmen Stewart to the farmers of Kingston and St Andrew, and the tremendous support they gave to the JAS and the agricultural sector for over 40 years cumulatively. This function is being planned for February 2011.
We were deeply saddened by the news that former Custos of Kingston Rev Canon Weeville Gordon passed on. The Kingston and St Andrew chapter of the JAS hails this humble giant who has served so many Jamaicans, including our farmers, and the excellent relationship he had with the Kingston and St Andrew JAS. He was a big supporter of the “Grow what we eat campaign” that I launched as president of the JAS on November 25, 2003. He attended and supported the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Agricultural Show, Agrofest held on the Jamaica College grounds since 1996. He was a big supporter of the container garden project in the inner cities, implemented by the JAS and RADA, with the support of Food for the Poor — REAP programme, and he always encouraged the JAS to continue to work with the farmers, so we can be self-sufficient in our food.
We also note that where he occasionally represented the governor general at JAS national functions and stressed the importance of the JAS was to national development.
Canon Weeville Gordon was a man for all seasons. A great servant of the people who did not have to speak to be heard. His sense of humanity reminded us all what greatness is about – to serve and not to be served and to help contribute to a better quality of life for all.
We place on record our deep appreciation for his service to Jamaica and in particular to our farmers and the JAS. We extend our sincere condolence to his wife and children and extended family.
