Take care on the roads, please!
TRANSPORT and Works Minister Mike Henry has again urged Jamaicans to more careful on the roads.
Henry, who has expressed regrets at Sunday’s tragic collision on the Palisadoes main road in Kingston, which left two students dead, and a collision in Trelawny which resulted in three deaths, said he was disturbed that efforts to keep road deaths below the 300 mark was being seriously jeopardised.
“I am calling on all Jamaicans, whether walking, riding or driving, to be extremely careful on the roads this holiday season, as it is so much better to be around in January to meet the challenges of a new year,” Henry said.
In a reference to the death of the students of the Caribbean Maritime Institute — an agency of his ministry — Henry said he felt “a personal loss within the family of an institution that I have literally taken on as my own”. He added that the institute had done well in expanding to meet the need for maritime skills globally, and he had noted the growth in its curriculum and enrollment over recent years.
“Unfortunately, in the midst of it all, we have now lost two of those who promised so much, which is really very sad,” said Henry.
He said the Trelawny accident was of no less account on the national scale, as both incidents had combined to put the target of under 300 road deaths this year under serious pressure.
