Gregg dominates JMMC rally
Gary ‘The Colonel’ Gregg has done it again taking home the championship title for yet another year in the JMMC Rally Jamaica 2010 held over the December 3 to 5, weekend.
This rally racing maestro made mince meat of his competitors, aided by his co-driver, Hugh Hutchinson in a 4WD Ford Focus WRC.
Gregg held firm in front against the threat of second placed Bajan Sean Gill with co-driver Michael Cummings. And although the British were coming, UK driver Robert Swann and co-driver Darren Garrod had to settle for third place. Gill competed in the highly touted 4WD Suziki SX4 WRC, while Swann drove a 4WD 2008 Subaru Impreza N14.
The usually potent Jeffrey Panton and co-driver Michael Fennell Jr, driving a similar car to Gregg, however did not finish.
Rally Jamaica 2010 did nonetheless not disappoint as spectators were treated to the driving skills of their favourite drivers led by ‘The Colonel’
Gregg lived up to his five star rating as both days he dominated not only the rally, but came out on top of his class and was also crowd the overall JA9 lass champion.
Swann copped the JN8 Class Championship, while Thomas Hall and Co-Driver Andre Gordon took the honours for the JA4 class in a 2WD Toyota Starlet.
The infamous Bobby Marshall stood true to his various rally victories, as he and his co-driver Michelle Laidlaw maneuvered the course in a 2WD Mitsubishi Mirage to take the JA3 title.
Another 2WD Mitsubishi Mirage would feature prominently, driven to JA2 class victory by Dion Gardener and co-driver Gina Tomlinson. Although not finishing in the overall standing, Matthew Gore and co-driver Raymond Farquharson, driving a 2WD Toyota Starlet placed first in the JA2 class on Day two of the rally. Gordon McDowell and co-driver Derrick McDowell also shone on Day two, in a 4WD Mazda 323 in the JA7 class.
The highly anticipated Downtown Kingston final stage of Rally Jamaica 2010 feted the fans to a very exciting display of motor sports craft by the rally drivers. Sean Gill dominated this stage as he showcased the power and might of his Suziki SX4, finishing point two seconds ahead of favourite Gregg and at the top of the JA9 class.
The young and very impressive Joel Jackson and co-driver Dmitri Dawkins finished third overall and first in the JN8 class, on this leg of the rally in his 4WD Subaru Impreza. Not to be outdone in the Downtown leg of the rally was dragster Maurice Whittingham, who along with his co-driver Ameer Johnson put on a spectacular performance and finished atop the JA2 class.
The JMMC Rally Jamaica 2010 will long be remembered for the thrills and racing frenzy, and a resurgence of energy in the sport, where WRC is the now name of the game.
