Opposition must help protect Jamaica’s image
Dear Editor,
The government has dismissed the WikiLeaks cables in which Cuba appeared last year to be “bad-mouthing” the Jamaican government over its failure to tackle the international drug trade as it affects the two countries and the wider international community.
In fact, the Jamaican government reiterated that there was no truth to the allegations contained in the United States diplomatic cables that were leaked by the new media outfit, WikiLeaks cable.
Now, the Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Mr Peter Bunting, is a man whom I respect. I also respect his party, the People’s National Party, because I feel that they are a good and strong Opposition that looks out for the interest of the people and work well on their behalf. This is way I am appalled at times when I hear the kind of objections the PNP makes in the public domain. It is not good, especially on this matter involving the cables.
Mr Bunting should wait until the government responds before he speaks on the airwaves.
Mr Bunting, as a government minister-in-waiting, you must stop and look. You should avoid making allegations and jumping to conclusions too quickly. Please follow the correct channels, and strive to protect the image of Jamaica whenever incidents occur such as the one involving the WikiLeaks cables.
The previous government fought against the international drug trade, and I also recall at the recent Caricom meeting the chairman Prime Minister Bruce Golding speaking out against the trade. Therefore, I urge the Opposition to work with the government to support this beautiful island called Jamaica, land we love. Whenever these negative matters arise to threaten our country’s image, the Opposition must help the government to protect us.
God bless you all.
