Portmore vs Sporting…Two to contest DPL round final
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Portmore United and Sporting Central Academy will meet in the second end-of-round final of the Digicel Premier League after yesterday’s final set of matches in round two.
Portmore advanced on a round-leading 21 points after a 1-1 draw with Waterhouse (11 points) at the mini-stadium in Drewsland.
Sporting (19), for their part, held off champions Harbour View (17) in a 0-0 stalemate in east Kingston to book their spot.
Meanwhile, Humble Lion made it four wins on the trot without conceding after edging Arnett Gardens 1-0 in a hard-fought match at the Effortville Community Centre.
Kimroy Davis notched the winner from as early as the third minute when he rifled in a free-kick laid in his path by Denzil Watson.
Arnett Gardens pressed for the equaliser from there on, but had nothing to show for their industry at the break.
Goalkeeper Maurice Evans then came up with big saves to keep this team in the contest as he foiled goal-bound efforts from Davis, Watson and Omando McLeod mid-way the game.
Newton Sterling almost stole a point for the visitors with a last-gasp free-kick that smacked Shawn Sawyers in his chest, but could not find a way past the post as the hosts held on for the win.
Going into the week-long Yuletide break, Humble Lion assistant coach Max Straw had expressed the belief that his charges have now turned the corner after three successive wins lifted them out of the drop zone.
And following up with a victory over an opponent they’ve never beaten before certainly adds weight to the thought as they’ve now mined a maximum 12 points from their last four games to improve their overall tally to 25.
For Arnett, the defeat means that they have been eliminated from the race to reach the second-end-of-round final as they remained on 18 points.
On another day, it could have been a better result for the south St Andrew-based outfit as they had a few good opportunities to secure at least a point, but found the Humble Lion defence in a mean mood.
They went behind from a moment of share brilliance as Davis, who is returning to full fitness after being sidelined with injury, pulled a goal from the top draw.
The game was only three minutes old when McLeod was tripped just outside the box and Watson cheekily rolled the resulting free-kick through the legs of Peter Brown for Davis to drill home a ferocious right-footer high into the right hand corner of the goal as Effortville erupted in cheers.
Instead of settling the contest, the goal transformed it into a high-tempo affair with either team being provided little space to express themselves.
Nonetheless, Arnett, who have been thriving under the guidance of Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis — collecting 18 points this round to put themselves into contention for the end-of-round final — went in search of an early equaliser and won consecutive corners, but failed to make contact with any.
But the ‘Junglists’ were never out of the game and even looked like grabbing the equaliser each time they attacked, especially with the introduction of Sterling early in the second half.
