Sporting Central in football heaven
CLARENDON’S Sporting Central Academy survived a late onslaught to hold hosts Harbour View to a 0-0 draw and book their place alongside Portmore United in this Sunday’s Digicel Premier League (DPL) second-end-of-round final.
Harbour View’s Rafiek Thomas had numerous chances for the home team late in the game, but just could not find the net.
However, for Sporting Central, who were making their first appearance in a DPL end-of-round final, the occasion was momentous.
“We knew we had to come here and get a point or win and we got a point… and for an upcoming club being in an end-of round final for the first time, sure feels good,” said Sporting Central assistant coach, Nigel Stewart.
The first half failed to produce any sparks with the visitors looking the better of the teams for most parts. But the game came to life after the break as the host came out and turned things around.
The first chance of the evening fell to former national Under-20 midfielder Levaughn Williams in the 54th minute, but Michaud Barrett spectacularly parried his shot from 10 yards to keep his side in the contest.
Minutes later, Sporting defender Dale Watson almost grabbed a goal, but he flashed his header just wide of the target from a set-piece after he found room inside the box.
Just past the hour mark, Swaby came close for Sporting when he ran on to a ball at the back post, but he couldn’t redirect his effort on target. Gary McIntosh also escaped inside the area minutes later, but he too failed to really trouble Barrett with his effort.
As the game reached fever pitch, Thomas had a glancing header on target for Harbour View in the 64th minute, but Andre Blake in goal for Sporting was well positioned to make the save.
A minute later, the striker latched on to a though ball from John-Ross Edwards and skilfully flicked the ball between two defenders, but with only Blake to beat, he placed the ball wide of the goal.
Sporting kept the Harbour View defence on their toes, and with five minutes to go, captain Jevuaghn Watson surged through midfield before putting a low drive just past the post.
Harbour View could have stolen the end-of-round final spot, but again Thomas could not convert.
Harbour View coach Donovan Hayles commended Sporting on reaching their first end-of-round final, but believes his team had more than enough chances to have taken the spot.
