Design Star for Mercury Sprint

Playing a dominant role in his final run on December 18 as a two-year-old, Design Star returns to action as a three-year-old seeking to get his campaign going in a positive way by winning the $715,000 Mercury Sprint feature at Caymanas Park today.

With the Classic season another two months away, another two races for three-year-olds will further highlight the 10-race card with post time set at 12:40 pm.

The two-day racing carnival continues tomorrow with a lively eight-race card.

In the principal feature, Design Star owned by Michael T Gayle and trained by Patrick Lynch is well bred for this sort of journey and looks a major standout in the maiden special weight contest over 1,000 metres straight for 11 native-bred colts and geldings.

The three-year-old son of Vanadium out of Lady Sam (Smokehouse Sam) has ran against some of the best talents as a two-year-old and has done well enough to be considered for a top performance in this quick dash.

After running an exploratory race behind Saragossa on debut over 600 metres straight, Design Star followed with a solid third-place finish behind Jamaica Two-Year-old Stakes upset winner Coneyislandboy in a maiden condition race event on December 18.

Since then the grey animal has been on the exercise track in preparation for his three-year-old outing and although not showing any particular electrifying times in his build up, he will do so well prepared for his third career run over the straight course.

Chris Douglas, who rode Design Star on last, will be back aboard and if approaching his display in December, he ought to be good enough against his 10 opponents to get off the mark and he will do so shooting from the outside draw at barrier 11.

The most serious challenge to his attempt could come from The Messenger, Actus Reus, Jelani and the first-time runner Gold Runner.
