Reno blank Humble Lion

FROME, Westmoreland — Craig Foster and Evan Taylor were on target for the home side as they blanked Humble Lion 2-0 in their second round Digicel Premier League encounter at Frome Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Reno’s captain O’Brian Woodbine began the play that resulted in Foster’s goal, with an eighth minute throw-in 15 yards down Humble Lion’s right touch line that found Kenroy Hutchinson, who headed inside where Foster controlled between two defenders, dribbled forward, then booted home past custodian Shawn Sawyers.

Taylor’s seal came in the final minute of the four added on by FIFA referee Dave Peterkin, during which Omar Parker was yellow-carded and Reno awarded a free kick just 10 yards outside Humble Lion’s penalty box and directly in front of goal. Wilson strode calmly to the ball, passed it right of the four-man wall, where Taylor advanced, collected neatly, dribbled behind the wall to face Sawyers, then shot past him to score at the back post.

After the first goal the home team took control of the remainder of the first half with Linval Wilson Junior taking command in defence, supported by Omar Dallas and Andre Patterson, to nullify the dangerously marauding foursome of Omando McLoud, Denzil Watson, Trevol Smith and Jermaine Gordon.

Reno lost Woodbine on the half hour to a knee injury sustained in a three-man collision with a teammate and an opponent. He was stretchered off but assistant coach Michael Graham told The Observer on Thursday that “the doctor says there is no ligament damage, no tear, nothing serious”.

On the resumption, the approximately 400 fans witnessed some sloppy passing by Reno’s Reid, Patterson and Kemar Dawkins and more purposeful combinations by the visitors, which now involved substitutes Kimroy Davis, Michael Morland and Julien Nugent, that swung the game Humble Lion’s way but faulty shooting denied them any goals.

“We lost discipline here and there in the game; that caused the pressure but no matter how shabby, three points at home is good,” remarked Graham. He said the addition of more Under-21 players into the squad came about “due to losing five senior players for one match and now the seniors have to work to regain their spot.”

“We have been playing good football, creating chances but not scoring, not improving in the past three games,” bemoaned losing coach Lenworth Hyde. “I can’t figure it out but something is wrong with the team; just trying to get this jinx off us for the next match.”

Teams: Reno — Gavin Barrett, Omar Dallas, Linval Wilson Junior, Andre Patterson, Evan Taylor, Jashane Foster, Obrian Woodbine (Omar Johnson 62nd), Troy Reid (Delroy Phillips 85th), Kenroy Hutchinson, Craig Foster, Kemar Dawkins (Shane Anderson 62nd).
