Leroy Sibbles, AJ Brown headline Lover’s Weekend at Studio 38
LEGENDARY Heptone, Leroy Sibbles is expected to kick off lover’s weekend at Studio 38 with a live performance tonight.
When he hits the stage in his Studio 38 debut, Leroy will join a long line of great Jamaican artistes who have performed at this venue in a little more than a year.
The list includes Tanya Stephens who drew Studio 38’s biggest concert audience last Friday.
Others who are now a part of that tradition include Beres Hammond, Toots Hibbert, Ken Booth, the late great Gregory Isaacs (who gave his last performance at Studio 38), John Holt, Freddie McGregor, Tarrus Riley, Beenie Man, George Nooks, U-Roy, Ken Booth, Pluto Shervington, Ernie Smith, Yellowman, Pinchers, Admiral Bailey and many more.
Meanwhile, balladeer AJ Brown, himself a Studio 38 alumni, will end the Valentine’s weekend of performances on Sunday night, with a performance billed as Valentine’s Love Fest. AJ previously appeared on the same bill as Toots Hibbert and is expected to repeat his performance come Sunday night.
In addition to his work with The Heptones, Leroy Sibbles was a session bassist and arranger at Sir Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd’s recording studio and the associated Studio One label during the prolific late 1960s.
Sibbles began singing in the 1950s and joined The Heptones in 1965. The trio made their first recording in 1966 then moved to Studio One where they stayed until 1971. Signature Heptones songs included Baby, Get in the Groove, Ting a Ling, Fattie Fattie, Party Time, and Sweet Talking.
