House approves local elections for March 2012
BILLS postponing local government elections until March, 2012, were passed during today’s sitting of the House of Representatives at Gordon House.
The bills sought to amend the provisions governing local government elections, in order to extend the due date from no later than December 31, 2010 to no later than March 31, 2012.
Following a stormy debate, the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won the vote by 30 votes to 23 against the opposition People’s National Party (PNP). The bills will now go to the Senate for further debate.
