Local karters head to Florida for Rotax series
Jamaican’s go-kart team of seven drivers in three classes will next weekend head to Palm Beach, Florida to compete in rounds three and four of the Florida Winter tour.
Competing are karters Justin Sirgany in Rotax Micromax; Thomas Issa, Joshua Sirgany and Jonathan Law in Rotax Minimax with Colin Daley, William Myers and Mathew Williams in Rotax Junior.
Rounds one and two were held last month in Orlando.
According to Andrew Jackson, president of the Jamaica Karting Association, the opening rounds of the Florida Winter Tour Rotax Challenge Series had “a little bit of everything.”
“It had qualifying in the rain. It had races run under the lights. It had extremely cold weather with high winds and bright, calm sunny days,” Jackson told Auto. “There were current Indy Car Series drivers, European formula car drivers, karting champions of several nationalities, drivers from over 30 countries and the reigning DD2 World Champion.”
Micromax driver Justin Sirgany last month finishing in the top five in round one but was unable to finish round two where as his engine refused to fire after a restart.
The karting series, one of the largest in the world, is run over six weekends, January to March each year, and attract about 300 karters.
“Many drivers including professional car drivers use the event to sharpen their skills during the colder months,” Jackson said.
