Cavalier back on top in Super League
DEFENDING champion Cavalier regained pole position to lift the Claro Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League title with a 4-0 win over Santos as previous leaders August Town faltered in a 1-1 draw with Real Mona.
Cavalier, who led for most of the season, were last week beaten and overtaken by August Town with two games remaining.
But things turned dramatically in their favour on Saturday as August Town dropped two crucial points in a 1-1 draw with bottom team Real Mona to be on 47 points.
Cavalier joined them on 47 points, and with both teams sharing a win each in their head-to-head clashes, the goal difference is in Cavalier’s favour. Cavalier have a goal difference of 28 compared to August Town’s 26.
The battle for championship honours will be fought down to the final week where Cavalier will play away to a fifth-placed Rae Town, a team they battled to the wire last season, while August Town will be hoping to beat ninth-placed Barbican by three more goals than what Cavalier will be able to gather.
Cavalier’s title hope were reignited by a crushing 4-0 win over former champion Santos at Collie Smith Drive.
Richard Williams opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Donovan Bernard doubled the advantage in the 37th minute. Jermaine Grey made it 3-0 in the 67th minute and Fabian Nethersole completed the rout in the 80th against his former club he left in the January transfer window. Santos stayed fifth on 29 points.
At Buttercup Park, Chad Bennett gave struggling Real Mona a 53rd minute lead, but Gee Daley equalised for August Town in the 73rd minute for a crucial point.
While August Town are tied at the top, Real Mona remained at the bottom of the 12-team league with 16 points.
The University of the West Indies (UWI) consolidated third spot with a 3-1 win over Rockfort to be on 41 points, nine clear of Rockfort on 32 in fourth spot.
The competition’s leading goalscorer Anthony Grant notched a double in the 20th and 45th minutes, pushing his tally to 19.
Devon Smith got the other for UWI in the 15th minute, while Peter Fowlin responded for Rockfort on the 70th minute.
In other games, Mountain View whipped Rae Town 3-1 to be in seventh spot on 25 points; Constant Spring jumped to eighth spot on 23 points after edging Bull Bay 1-0 and Duhaney Park moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Barbican.
Duhaney Park are 10th on 19 points, ahead of Bull Bay on 17 and Real Mona on 16 with one round remaining.
Next Saturday, any of the three teams can be relegated as Duhaney Park play Bull Bay in a mammoth encounter, while Real Mona tackle Santos.
