Yuvraj’s brilliance overpowers Ireland
CHENNAI, India (CMC) — A decisive, all-round performance from Yuvraj Singh propelled India to a five-wicket victory over Ireland in the World Cup yesterday.
Yuvraj collected a One-Day International career-best five wickets for 31 runs from 10 overs with his uncomplicated left-arm spin, as Ireland, sent in to bat, were dismissed for 207 in 47.5 overs in their Group B match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
He then gathered the top score of an even, unbeaten 50 from 75 balls to lead India to 210 for five in response, and earn the Man-of-the-Match award.
Yusuf Pathan completed the journey for India with 24 balls remaining, when he swung a short delivery from John Mooney to the mid-wicket boundary for four.
Most of India’s top-order batsmen got starts, but no one carried on like Yuvraj. Sachin Tendulkar made 38, Virat Kohli scored 34, the same for India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and Pathan was not out on 30.
Trent Johnston and spinner George Dockrell ended with two wickets apiece.
The result earned India two points and they move to five, as Ireland failed to repeat their giant-killing act against the World Cup co-hosts to remain on two points.
