Battle for survival intensifies in Western Confed Super League
LITTLE LONDON, Westmoreland — The four teams in the relegation zone of the Jamaica Football Federation Captain’s Bakery and Grill Western Confederation Super League will be in action today as they seek to dig themselves out of the bottom of the table.
With the top teams Seba United and Wadadah winning and increasing their lead in the points table, the battle to avoid the drop will intensify as the return round continues.
Three of the four promoted teams are facing an immediate drop with Tomorrow’s People in ninth place on 17 points, three behind Bamboo. Russia come next on 12 points with Cousins Cove in last place on six points.
Today, Russia host Tomorrow’s People at Bay Road in Little London, Westmoreland, while Exidos and Cousin’s Cove are at Friendship in Trelawny.
Leaders Seba, meanwhile, chalked up their 14th win of the season when a first-minute goal from Kemar James, his 20th of the season, gave them a 1-0 win over Bamboo at Jarrett Park.
The teams had drawn 0-0 in the first round and the win helped the St James team maintain their 11-point lead over Wadadah, who recovered from an early goal to edge Harmony 4-3 in a game that swung from end to end.
Wadadah trailed 2-3 with 15 minutes to go before Steven Irving scored the last two goals of the game to snatch the win for the mid-season champions.
Ricardo Reid gave Harmony the lead after just 10 minutes, but Curtis Palmer snapped his goal drought to score twice, in the 17th and 23rd minutes as Wadadah led 2-1 at half-time.
Former national striker Teofore Bennett levelled the scores for Harmony in the 46th minute before another former Village United Premier League player Everette Mullings scored in the 73rd minute to restore the lead for the Trelawny side.
Irving, however, scored in the 74th and 86th minutes for the home team to improve to 33 points, as Harmony ended the game with 10 players after Delroy Williams was sent off.
Former champions Granville closed the gap on third-placed Frome FC to two points after beating them 3-1 at the Sam Sharpe Teachers College grounds.
Rodney Hines got his first goal of the season in the ninth minute for Granville, while Michael Thompson made it 2-0 at half-time, scoring in the 39th minute.
Adrian Robinson pulled one back for Frome in the 61st minute, but a defender’s goal 10 minutes later sealed the deal for Granville.
