Oberlin ahead, as four records tumble at Eastern Champs

Oberlin ahead, as four records tumble at Eastern Champs

FORMER champions Oberlin were in the lead after 17 finals, while four records were broken up to press time on the first day of the Eastern Athletics Championships at the UWI Usain Bolt Track yesterday.

Oberlin had 136 points overall followed by defending champions Buff Bay with 128, Titchfield with 55, Glengoffe, 50; and St Mary, 49.5 rounding out the top five.

Meanwhile, Shavannes Robinson of Titchfield High, the defending champion, and reigning ISSA Boys champion set a new record to retain his title in the Class Three boys 1,500 metres in a time of four minutes 31.34 seconds.

He broke the record of 4:39.45 held by Morant Bay’s Raquino Henry.

Robinson beat Ackeem Stewart of Happy Grove into second (4:47.52) and Steve Webb of Oberlin into third in 4:51.08.

Oberlin’s Shanice Lee also posted a new record in the Class Two girls high jump after clearing 1.65m.

The record was previously held by Trudy Ann Powell, who soared 1.55m to win last year.

Brianna Wright of Buff Bay was second with a jump of 1.60m and Riah Jones of Morant Bay third with 1.55m.

Also in the field, Shantel Reid of Titchfield twice set a new record in the Class One girls discus, winning with a throw of 38.35m.

Reid shattered the previous record (33.41m) set by Morant Bay’s Ashantia Hayden in 2001.

Syriece Jones of Titchfield with 33.35m was second, while Shanique Myers of Oberlin threw 32.89m for third.

Paul Bogle’s Robert Thomas broke his own Class One discus record, throwing 47.14m and bettering the 39.01m he threw last year.

Meanwhile, Anna Kay McCallum claimed the Class One girls 1,500m in a time of 5:26.86 ahead of Lacy-Ann Lecky of Buff Bay in 5:31.41 and Shareen Daley of Seaforth in 5:36.50.

Rohan Simms of Titchfield clocked 4:15.75 minutes to win the boys event ahead of Annotto Bay’s Collin Miles (4:23.16) and Marcel Lamb of Oberlin in 4:25.31.

Margaret McKay won the Class Two girls equivalent in a time of 5:21.29 minutes ahead of Sanque Richards of Glengoffe in 5:25.06 and Diane Lamont of St Mary’s College in 5:45.77.

The Class Two boys race was won by Yallahs’ Orando Morgan (4:26.80) with Annotto Bay’s Gawayne Richards second in 4:29.55 and Anthony Small of St Mary in 4:31.01.

Sashae Fender of Oberlin posted 5:13.08 minutes to win the Class Three girls 1,500m ahead of Shamona Hunt of Glengoffe (5:18.12) and Doneta Archer of Buff Bay (5:28.09).

Elsewhere on the field, Buff Bay’s Romario Rodney threw 37.14m to win the Class Two boys discus ahead of his teammate Romario Willis, who threw 35.73m.

Oberlin’s Savian Stephens threw 34.26m for third.

Shanique Boyd of Buff Bay won the Class One girls high jump, clearing the bar at 1.55m ahead of her teammate Marsha-Kaye Montaque with a similar height and Jodian Harris of Oberlin with 1.45m.

Her teammate Shadai Murray claimed the Class Three event with 1.40m, the same mark as second-and third-placed finishers Desire Hunter of Oberlin and Shannell Thomas of Buff Bay.

In Class Four, Oberlin’s Shaday Anderson cleared the bar at 1.45m for victory.

Shanice Burrell was second with 1.35m and Shantell Allen third with a similar height.

St Mary High’s Ackeem Robertson claimed the Class One boys long jump with a leap of 6.50m ahead of Happy Grove’s James Passley with a leap of 6.46m and Jason Clarke of Buff Bay with 6.35m.

Christopher Shakespeare of Morant Bay claimed the Class Two boys long jump, clearing 6.15m ahead of Theo Walker of St Mary High with a leap of 6.11m and St Mary Tech’s Tashane Riley with 5.99m.

In the girls Class Two event, Trudy McCalla and Kadeisha Jonas of Oberlin had a one-two finish with McCalla leaping 5.40m and Jonas 5.19.

Shamoya McNeil finished third with a leap of 5.02m.

The Class Four girls long jump went to Glengoffe’s Trishauna Hemmings who leapt 4.43m ahead of Raphana Brown of Buff Bay (4.31m) and Oberlin’s Theana Fraser (4.17m).

Today’s finals include the 4x100m relays in classes for boys and girls; boys 1,600m sprint medley relay; girls and boys 800m Classes One, Two and Three, 200m for boys and girls Classes One, Two and Three, and 400m for boys and girls Classes One, Two and Three.

St Thomas Technical are the fastest qualifiers entering the Class One boys 4x100m with a time of 43.27 seconds.

The other qualifiers are Oberlin, Seaforth, Tacky, Annotto Bay, St Mary, Yallahs, and Morant Bay.
