St George’s dominate Reno at wet Frome
FROME, Westmoreland — Visitors St George’s SC dug deep to earn a 2-1 win over Reno FC in their Digicel Premier League encounter at the Frome Sports Complex on Sunday.
All goals came in the second half following an opening period played on a wet surface that was slightly dominated by the hosts, but the former champions failed to convert as Troy Reid, Shane Anderson, Davion Thorpe and captain Nicholy Finlayson were far from the best.
The rains that had sprinkled the pitch before kick-off returned and continued into a steady drizzle to the end of the contest.
On a wet surface that appeared to favour the visitors, the deadlock was broken in the 55th minute when Damion Harwood finished off a fine build-up from close range.
St George’s continued their attacking game as they sought to consolidate their position, but gave up their lead in the 65th minute when Shane Anderson scored from a goalmouth mêlée.
St George’s stole the win after Davis stabbed home from inside the box for the 2-1 finish.
“I think we played a good tactical game… we got two chances and scored (and earned) these important three points,” said St George’s coach Geoffrey Maxwell.
Conversely, Reno’s technical director Wendell Downswell, back from his successful bid to qualify the National Under-17 team for the Youth World Cup, bemoaned the team’s performance. “Offensively we didn’t do as well as expected… we suffered the consequences of mistakes in the last 20 minutes,” he said.
