Village, Sporting in 1-1 stalemate
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Village United and Sporting Central Academy, two teams seeking the safety of the mid tables, played out a 1-1 draw in their Digicel Premier League third round game at the Elliston Wakeland Centre on Sunday.
Despite playing with 10 men from the 25th minute after Linval Lewis picked up his second yellow card in two minutes, Sporting scored first through Levaughn Williams before Village drew level, thanks to a well-taken goal from Aldane Grant.
The point helped Sporting draw level with Reno and Arnett Gardens on 39 points, all bunched in mid tables as Village slipped to ninth position on 37 points.
The draw extended the home team’s unbeaten run to three games, coming after two wins against Harbour View and Reno.
The visitors grabbed the lead in the 52nd minute when Williams punched home the ball from a goalmouth scrum after Village failed to clear the ball away.
The lead lasted just seven minutes before Grant was sent through by Andre Williams, with the former running ran onto the ball before chipping the ball over diving goalkeeper, Jacomeno Barrett.
Village should have gone ahead midway the second half, but wasted two good scoring chances. Dino Williams had a clear shot at goal in the 61st minute, but tried an overhead kick, which he skied.
Three minutes later a free kick from substitute Troy Smith just skimmed the goal post on its way out of play.
Late in the game, the home team laid siege to the Sporting goal and had several chances, but failed to get past Barrett in the goal.
