Oberlin triumph – But Seaforth’s Bell sends 400m warning
OBERLIN High won the 25th Jamaica National-sponsored Eastern Schools Athletic Championships at the Usain Bolt Track, University of the West Indies, with 567 points yesterday.
The many-time winners finished ahead of defending champions Buff Bay, 526; Titchfield, 288; St Mary High, 281; and Morant Bay, 247.5 on the second day of the meet, which has been in existence for some 46 years.
Nine records were broken yesterday, led by Seaforth High star Javere Bell, who completed the one-lap event in a record 46.91 seconds.
This makes him the leading schoolboy over the distance this season, after dominating the backstretch in the final.
Bell returned to clock 21.88 seconds to cop the 200 metres and a fine double, barely missing out on the record after dismissing Nicardo Cameron of St Mary High.
Meanwhile, Morant Bay’s Romar Foster clocked 14.63 seconds to smash the Class 2 boys 110 metres hurdles; Yallahs’ Jordan Tucker hurled the Class 3 boys discus a new distance of 41.02 metres; Dorian Anderson of Buff Bay heaved the shot a record 11.39 metres, teammate Romario Rodney cleared 1.80 metres in the Class 2 boys high jump and Kimron Bailey threw 12.66 metres to capture the Class 3 boys shot event.
St Mary High’s Titania Markland clocked 2 minutes, 29.71 seconds and 55.44 seconds to win the 800-400 double in Class 2; Robert Thomas of Paul Bogle threw 47.14 for the Class 1 discus record to complete the 12 records that were broken over the two-day meet.
Oberlin’s Sashae Fender took the 400 in 59.38 seconds.
Understandably, Bell was very pleased with his record run.
“I felt very good. I was relaxed and did what my coach asked me to do. The training has been going well and I’m doing what is to be done to prevent injury,” he said.
“I missed out on the record in the 200. The corner was shabby as I’m not focused on it as yet,” Bell told the Observer.
Meanwhile, triple winner at the meet was Titchfield’s Shavanes Robinson who won the 1500 in 4:31.34, the 800 in 2:07.8 and the 400 in 52.90.
Romar Foster of Morant Bay captured the 100m in 11.10 seconds, the 200 in 22.71 seconds, the 110m hurdles in 14.63 seconds and returned to anchor his school’s sprint relay team to victory.
Winning coach Everton Leslie was elated with the victory.
“I know the championship was ours; we planned for it and we were successful. There aare few athletes who will go on to Boys and Girls Champs” he said.
Coach of Buff Bay, Kevin Brown, was gracious in defeat: “Congrats to Oberlin,” he said. “We had some mishaps and we lost, so we will go and rebuild.”
