Test for Boyz – U-20s play first practice game in Brazil
SENIOR team representative Marvin Morgan arrived at Jamaica’s U-20 squad’s training base at Traffic Academy in Porto Feliz, Brazil, yesterday, giving the Young Reggae Boyz a boost ahead of their first practice match against Sao De Azucar Sports Club in Sao Paulo this morning.
The Boys’ Town attacker who is on trial with San Roque, a Second Division outift in Spain, spent two weeks with the Spanish side and will return to Spain until the end of the season at the end of upcoming World Cup the qualifiers.
Morgan told the Observer he is confident of landing a deal with the Spanish club which has already registered him but is yet to sign a deal.
The 19-year-old arrived at Traffic Academy around 8:00 am and despite working out briefly with the team during the morning and evening sessions, will not feature in this afternoon’s encounter, according to Brazilian Walter Gama.
Gama said to avoid any injuries, Morgan will rest today but will be incorporated into tomorrow’s training and will definitely feature in the team’s second game on Saturday against Palmeiras.
Gama, who coached a number of these players at the U-17 level two years ago, said they will not be making any special preparations for today’s game and that the squad will divided into two to ensure all the players get to participate in the match.
“We will play one team in the first half and another in the second…,” he disclosed.
However, he believes the team is progressing and the game will give an indication of their development since arriving in ‘Samba Land’ a week ago.
Coaches Luciano Gama and Andrew Edwards also believe the team looks good so far and that the match will be a good Test.
Gama said he was curious to see how the team performs in the game, but is hopeful they will give a good account of themselves.
“We want to see the reaction from them when they confront another team, a good team like the one we are to play tomorrow (today).
“We want to see good ball possession as we’ve been working a lot on that and we want to see them stopping those high balls,” he said.
“But this will provide us the chance to see all the players and analyse everything… and this is a chance for us to know the players and the players to know each other,” he said while adding that the result will not be important.
Edwards said the splitting of the team will lessen the chances of players picking up injuries. Meanwhile, Paul Wilson, Gregory McCogg and Ramone McKenzie were pulled from the morning training after suffering minor knocks.
Wilson felt a twitch in his hamstring and goalkeeper McCogg continued to monitor a slight ankle problem, while McGregor felt a slight pain in his knee while running steps and was rested as a precaution.
Another goalkeeper, Shaven Paul, missed the morning session after picking up a hip injury on Tuesday evening.
However, the full squad turned out to practise in the evening, which focused on organisation and set pieces, although Neco Brett picked up a knock to the ankle during a squad game and could miss today’s match, while Wilson was only allowed to do light jogging.
