Cavalier, August Town eye Super League crown
Cavalier or August Town will be crowned Claro Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League champion today in what is expected to be a tense final day.
Cavalier, the defending champion and former champion August Town are on 47 points and are only separated by goal difference after having identical head to head records of 2-0 wins apiece.
The odds favour Cavalier, seeing that they have a superior goal difference of 28 compared to August Town’s 26.
If both teams win, August Town would want to win by three more goals than what Cavalier score to snatch the title from under their noses.
Cavalier will travel to Breezy Castle to play seventh-placed Rae Town on 26 points, while August Town host eighth-placed Barbican on 22 points.
Two weeks ago August Town defeated Cavalier 2-0 and snatched pole position but dropped two crucial points in 1-1 draw with lowly Real Mona last week and were overtaken by Cavalier who blanked Santos 4-0.
In 2009, Cavalier lost out to August Town on goal difference and they cannot afford for a repeat, especially sitting in the pole position.
However, the white and black-clad Cavalier cannot expect any favours from a Rae Town team still peeved after losing the title to Cavalier last season.
In an epic battle which last until the last two weeks, Cavalier had a one-point lead over Rae Town but the latter was stripped of three points for using an ineligible player and effectively ended their title pursuit. With that in mind, Cavalier will have to work overtime to retain the title.
In their first encounter, both teams played to a 1-1 draw and with nothing but pride at stake for Rae Town, Cavalier are expected to do enough and secure another Super League title.
August Town seem to have the easier task against a Barbican outfit they defeated 1-0 on December 11, 2010.
Meanwhile, Real Mona and Bull Bay on 17 points each have been relegated as 10th-placed Duhaney Park are four points ahead on 21 points.
Duhaney Park host Bull Bay at Baldwin Crescent, while Real Mona tackle fifth-placed Santos on 29 points at the Bell Chung Oval.
In the other games, third-placed the University of the West Indies (UWI) on 41 points play sixth-placed Mountain View on 28 points.
Former champion Constant Spring in ninth spot on 22 points take on fourth-placed Rockfort on 32 points.
In Major League action, leader Greenwich Town with 32 points travel to fifth-placed Police National on 20 points.
Second-placed Olympic Gardens on 29 points will have a rest week and could see the gap increase with their inactivity.
Third-placed Seaview Gardens on 25 points should get the better of a Central Kingston outfit in seventh spot on 20 points.
Allman/Woodford (17) tackle Shortwood (21); Brown’s Town (17) host Cooreville Gardens (25) and Molynes United (8) versus Stony Hill (5).
