Milex Eagles, Millsborians, UTech Spartans post wins in KPMG squash league
Defending champions, the Millsborians, last year’s runners-up, the Milex Eagles and outside favourites, the UTech Spartans all won their most recent matches as the 10th Annual KPMG squash league tournament continued.
The Millsborians defeated the Dark Horses without losing a match as Jake Mahfood beat Andrew Shim 21/16, 21/16, 21/17, Mark Pontifex toppled Sanya Goffe 13/21, 21/18, 21/18, 21/18 and Mary Mahfood bested Stephen Reid 21/19, 21/20, 21/23, 21/18.
Similarly, the Milex Eagles beat the Lemons Mafia taking three out of three matches. Veteran champion Karen Anderson staved off a challenge from Douglas Beckford 13/21, 21/19, 23/20, 9/21, 21/19, while Kyle Chin defeated Andrew Levy 21/16, 10/21, 21/17, 21/10 and Jaime Douglas beat Desmond Hayle 21/18, 21/19, 21/15.
Lemons Mafia was quick to shake off the loss and go on to beat the UTech Saints 2-1. Rachel Gore lost 21/19, 21/19, 17/21, 5/21, 21/20 to Ashante Smith, but Douglas Beckford defeated Paul Golding 21/16, 21/11, 21/19 and Andrew Levy beat Donald Clemetson 21/18, 21/16, 11/21, 21/15.
In other action, the UTech Spartans, who are considered serious challengers to the Millsborians and the Eagles for this year’s title, defeated Loose Strings 2-1. Anthony Edwards lost to Rajeev Venugopal 21/19, 21/19, 21/20, but then Nathlee Boreland stormed back to beat Garfield Knight 21/15, 21/18, 18/21, 21/8 and Otarto Carroll got past Stuart Murray 16/21, 21/18, 21/17, 21/5.
The Spartan’s win over the Loose Strings followed a victory over the highly rated Travoltas, whom the Spartans beat in three out of three matches.
In addition, True Grit posted a 2-1 win over the UTech Colts. Lowell Lawrence lost to Dominic Cover 21/17, 21/15, 21/17, but Yvonne Clarke beat Hopeton Sinclair 21/20, 9/21, 23/21, 19/21, 21/14 and Dave Morrison defeated Michael Fennell 16/21, 21/12, 21/15, 12/21, 21/12 to seal the win for True Grit.
