Reid arrives as Young Boyz focus on 2nd game
The arrival of Jamaica Football Federation’s (JFF) general secretary Horace Reid at Jamaica Under-20 football camp at the Traffic Football Academy yesterday seems to have intensified the focus and discipline of the young Reggae Boyz ahead of their second practice game against Palmeiras today.
The highly respected football administrator, who revealed that he is also here on other national team business, arrived at the Academy along with national Under-17 defender Alvas Powell, who trained with the team last evening.
And despite just witnessing one training session Reid said he was impressed with the level of urgency and efficiency under which the training was conducted by Luciano and Walter Gama.
“The session that I observed today I thought was an excellent one. It was very intense as none of the players had any time to idle, and that is one of the concerns which I have with how we prepare our teams back home,” he said.
“Too many of our sessions have too many breaks and that reflects the poor level on concentration which we have in the domestic league and even at the national level,” he added.
“So it was refreshing for me to see how a hard training session can be totally occupied and everyone involved from start to end.”
He also addressed the players and told them that they will need to work very hard if they hope of to realise their dream and qualify for the youth World Cup.
“It’s important the players understand their responsibility to this particular endeavour and it’s going to be incumbent on them to make and use every single moment in Brazil in a productive and focused way,” he said.
Meanwhile, coaches Luciano and Walter Gama concentrated mainly on correcting errors made by the team in their opening match on Thursday.
The morning session was focused on positional awareness and defensive tracking, while the evening training also dealt positional awareness, ball possession and offensive movements.
The players also looked sharp and seemed to be grasping the instructions of the coaching staff.
Luciano Gama noted that the time between the two games was limited and that the first game was used mainly for the players to know each other.
He said this afternoon he will be looking for the players with the right attitude and character.
“The boys are starting to improve on what we want from them, but we now have 27 players and we need to find the best 20 and best 11 (for Guatemala).
“So we will look for the attitude first and character, because in a competition like that maybe you don’t need the best players, but we need the guys with the right characters and right attitude,” he said.
He added that he was very happy with the evolution of the team and he expects to see an improved performance today.
