Cavalier grab title on tense final day
A nervy Cavalier FC emerged champions of the Claro/KSAFA Super League by a one goal difference, courtesy of two late goals in a 3-0 win over Rae Town at Breezy Castle yesterday.
With Cavalier leading 1-0 and with August Town dispatching Barbican 5-0, the defending champions had to do something special, and they did.
Cavalier scored two goals, in the 90th and 90+3 minutes, to snatch the championship with basically the last kick of the match.
Substitute Locksley Thompson had given Cavalier a 67th-minute lead and he popped up for his second in the 90th, and with three minutes of time added on, Donavan Alvaranga scored a beauty deserving of a title.
Both Cavalier and August Town finished on 50 points, but with the head-to-head clash being split, it was down to goal difference, and Cavalier finished with +31 to August Town’s +30.
Two seasons ago, the roles were reversed and August Town won the title with a superior goal difference ahead of Cavalier.
Cavalier missed a plethora of goalscoring opportunities and put themselves in a nerve-wracking position.
Winning player coach David Laylor said it was sweet to repeat as champions.
“When you saw the amount of goals we were throwing away it made us very frustrated, but at the end of the day we stuck to the task. It was a hard-fought win and we came out on top,” said a happy Laylor, who plays centre-half.
Cavalier, who started with a +3 goal difference ahead of August Town, had to wait until the 67th for substitute Locksley Thompson to open the scoring.
By that time August Town were rampant, leading Barbican 2-0 at the UWI Bowl. Then, by the 72nd minute, news again emerged that it was now 3-0.
Fingernails were bitten, sweat etched on the faces of the Cavalier faithfuls, including former player Andrew Thomas.
“Right through the game we were getting scores and we had to buckle up and we decided we have to press even harder,” said Laylor.
At the end of the day, it was all celebration for Cavalier as they collected the winning trophy presented by Claro’s promotional officer Charles Bromfield and KSAFA treasurer Errol Hewlett.
Meanwhile, relegated Real Mona whipped Santos 4-1 to finish on 20 points and Bull Bay edged Duhaney Park 1-0, but finished last on 20.
University of the West Indies (UWI) claimed third spot with a 3-0 win over Mountain View and Constant Spring and Rockfort drew 0-0.
