Sporting, Reno battle to 1-1 stalemate
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Sporting Central Academy and Reno have it all to play for if they are to claim a Digicel Premier League top-six position following their 1-1 draw yesterday at Brancourt.
Miscommunication between home ‘keeper Jacomeno Barrett and his defender Akeem Annakie led to Reno taking an early lead when the latter deflected a low cross into his own net with Barrett stranded.
Visiting goalie, Dennis Clayton, was also at fault when Sporting restored parity as he flapped at a simple cut-back, allowing Levaughn Williams ample time to recover from a mistake and poked home.
Williams and Francois Swaby had further opportunities to give Sporting a comfortable win, but flopped miserably with only Clayton to beat.
Westmoreland-based Reno could also count themselves unlucky not to have come away with full points as they, too, failed to take advantage of Sporting’s indecisiveness in defence.
Nonetheless, coach Wendell Downswell will be satisfied with the point away from home as it keeps them within touching distance of securing an elite position in their first season back from Confederation football.
For Sporting, it might just be an opportunity missed to edge ahead of Reno and Arnett Gardens in the race for that coveted top-half finish, as they must now beat defending champions Harbour View in their next game and hope for favourable results elsewhere.
