Bailey Cole, Williams win at Carifta Trials

EDWIN Allen’s Christania Williams and Kemar Bailey Cole were the most outstanding performers on yesterday’s first day of the Carifta Trials at the Stadium East to select Jamaica’s team for the 2011 Games.

Williams survived a false start to clock a brilliant 11.39 seconds (-1.3m/s) in winning the Under-20 girls 100m despite a challenge from Vere’s Deandra Whitehorne (11.56) and UTech’s Natasha Morrison (11.70).

The very tall Kemar Bailey Cole, formerly of Old Harbour High, appeared to almost stroll in clocking 11.41 seconds (-1.1 m/s) to win the Under-20 boys 100m ahead of Bridgeport’s Jazeel Murphy, who seemed to not realise he was in a final until he had already run 50m, but by then it was too late as Bailey Cole stretched away to victory.

Murphy was second in 10.50 secs while Jamaica College’s (JC) Deshawn Jackson was third in 10.73.

Odean Skeen of Wolmer’s Boys’ who was a double Under-17 sprint champion at last year’s Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands was notably absent, despite being entered in heat five of the Under-20 100 metres and indications are the Youth Olympic Games champion will not be in the Wolmer’s line-up at next week’s ISSA Boys championships after struggling with injury all season.

His teammate Julian Forte did not show up for the final despite qualifying in 10.90 to win heat three.

Wolmer’s head coach David Riley told the Sunday Observer they wanted the athlete to run at least one 100m before ‘Champs’.

Wolmer’s Shauna Helps came from behind to win the Under-17 girls 100m in 11.95, edging The Queen’s Shanice Bonner, who entered the final with the fastest qualifying time of 12.09.

Bonner finished second in 11.98 and Glenmuir’s Ashley Stephens in 12.23. Wolmer’s’ Raheem Robinson claimed the boys’ equivalent in 10.90 ahead of Bog Walk’s 10.93 and Gauwin Williams of Herbert Morrison in 10.93.

World Junior Championships 400m semi-finalist Janieve Russell of Holmwood got off to a brilliant start and was soundly in charge from the 200m mark as she outran Rushell Clayton of Vere to take the Under-20 400m hurdles in 59.15 seconds to Clayton’s 59.83.

Monique Lovelock of St Jago finished third in 1:00.71.

Manchester’s Omar McLeod won the boys’ equivalent in 51.86, while Munro’s Patrick Campbell posted 52.28 and Andre Clarke of Vere 53.09 for second and third.

Peta Gay Williams posted 42.32 to claim the Under-17 girls 300m hurdles ahead of STETHS’ Kimone Green, 42.53, and Krista Gay Taylor, 43.69.

Jorel Bellafonte made a push in the last 50m to win the Under-17 boys 800m in 1:57.46 ahead of Foga Road’s Kevon Robinson, 1:57. 49, and Munro’s Herbert Thomas, 1:59.05.

Lisa Buchanan clocked 2:16.42 to win the Under-17 equivalent ahead of Monique McPherson of Central (2:18.64) and Shanice Clarke of Vere (12:19.78).

Simoya Campbell of Spalding posted 2:09.04 to win the Under-20 girls 800m, while Chantal Duncan of Vere was second in 2:10.48.

Bog Walk’s Willomena Williams posted 2:12.30 for third.

Clarendon College’s Brian Smith ran 1:53.31 to victory in the boys’ equivalent as Holmwood’s Andre Hosey clocked 1:53.47 for second with Yannick Edwards of KC third in 1:54.15.

Webstan Pennant of St Jago clocked 9:29.51 in the Under-17 boys 3,000m, to finish ahead of Edwin Allen’s Akeem Francis in 9:37.63 and Carlington Reid of Calabar 9:45.16. The girls Under-20 event was won by St Jago’s Shannakay South in 10:56.22 ahead of Nickeisha Williams of STETHS in 10.59.01 and Sherene Whyte of Holmwood in 11:01.85. The Under-20 boys 5,000m was won by Khari Bowen in a time of 15:46.93 ahead of Ainsworth Daley of Cross Keys in 16:03.03 and Orane Wint of Bellefield in 16:21.98. Reigning Carifta champion Gleneve Grange of Holmwood threw 11.42m to win the Under-17 girls shot put ahead of Decoda Simpson of St Andrew with a throw 11.25m and Omesha Locke of Mannings with 11.29m.

Grange was a double winner, throwing 37.19m to win the Under-17 girls javelin ahead of Nayoka Davis of Excelsior, 29.76, and Kristen Deacon of Wolmer’s, 28.84.

The boys Under-17 Javelin was won by Zavian Richards of KC (40.58), with Adrian Richards of St Jago (39.00) and teammate Justin Hamilton (26.88) next.

Jeffrey King claimed the Under-20 event with 52.34m ahead of Rodrick Campbell of St Jago, 51.10, and Carlington Sinclair of Manchester, 50.75m.

Kellion Knibb of St Jago threw 45.39 for victory in the girls equivalent, while ICHS’s Veleisha Walker threw 37.68m for second.

Carifta Under-17 champion Clive Pullen of KC leaped 7.04m to win the Under-20 boys long jump ahead of Niclaus Phinn of JC, 6.69, and Krishna Christie of St Jago, 6.63.

Camperdown’s Nickeva Wilson leaped 6.19 to win the Under-17 girls long jump, upstaging reigning Carifta Champion Chanice Porter of Manchester (6.16m) and Halle Green of Queen’s third with 5.60m.

Krista Gay Taylor of Alpha claimed the Under-17 high jump clearing the bar at 1.70m. Annastacia Forrester cleared 1.65m for second as did Chenell Palmer of Vere for third. Twenty-six finals are scheduled for today, including the 100m hurdles for Under-17 and Under-20 girls; 110m hurdles for Under-17 and Under-20 boys; 200m for boys and girls; 1,500m boys and girls; 400m for boys and girls; Under-17 Discus for boys and girls; Under-20 boys pole vault; Under-20 boys and girls shot put; Under-17 and 20 boys triple Jump; Under-20 boys long jump, and Under-20 girls high jump.
