UWI J’ouvert & Carnival TUN UP!
THE annual UWI Mona carnival, J’ouvert saw a massive crowd of soca and paint-hungry patrons storm the university’s Students’ Union on Friday night.
The UWI’s J’ouvert is known to draw crowds from all over the Corporate Area. Gates were set to open at 9:00 pm and one patron told TEENage that she had been there from that time waiting to get in. At 12:30 Saturday morning, the crowd had grown even bigger.
On entrance, it was clear that water, soca music and paint all go well together. Patrons gyrated to the sounds DJ Billy, Code Red, ZJ Ice and DJ Titan VCD from Trinidad.
Refreshment areas were not readily accessible, as one had to walk through a multitude soaked in water and paint before being able to see the nearest refreshments.
The disc jockeys kept the attention of the crowd by adding some dancehall flavour, however, the event maintained its 95 per cent soca, five per cent dancehall rule.
At about 3:00 am, the party took to the Ring Road. However, this came to an unfavourable end when the music was halted allegedly by the police for at least 45 minutes and at around 4:00 am, the event saw itself dying a natural death in terms of music. Patrons were seen still dancing in the streets as they made their way to their separate destinations.
