Calabar’s Ohara is top ‘Champs’ boy

Tracey, Burton share girls honour

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Calabar High School Class Three athlete Michael Ohara was the overall champions boy, while Edwin Allen High’s Class One runner Ristananna Tracey and St Andrew High’s Rushelle Burton were both declared the champion girls on points at last week’s 101st staging of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

The 14-year-old Ohara tallied 23 points from two wins — the 100m and 100m hurdles and a fourth place in the 200m finals.

St Jago’s Webster Chung, who won the 2000m steeplechase Open and was second in the 5,000m Open and fifth in the Class One 1500m, was second overall with 20 points, followed by Wolmer’s Boy’s Ramone Bailey, Jamaica College’s Deshawn Jackson (the Class Two champion) and Calabar’s pair of 13 year-old Orville Dixon (a double winner) and Demar Robinson all on 18 points.

Tracey and Burton were triple winners in their respective classes tallying 27 points. Tracey in her final year in Class One won the 400m, 800m and the 400m hurdles, the latter in a new meet record 55.81 seconds.

Burton, who was also Class Four champion, won the 70m hurdles as well as the sprint double 100m/200m.

Edwin Allen’s Desreen Montaque and St Jago’s Kellion Knibb, who set a new record in the shot put Open 13.64m, both tallied 25 points each.

Tracey also took the Class One honours with 18 points, followed by Montaque (16) and St Elizabeth Technical’s high jump champion Peta-gay Reid and Holmwood Technical’s Yanique Ellington, who won the 200m. Both were tied on 15 points each.

Holmwood Technical’s Chrisann Gordon, who set a World Junior leading 51.62 seconds to win the Class Two 400m, the fourth fastest in the world so far of any female, scored 16 individual points to top Class Two.

Four athletes, including Gordon’s teammate Janieve Russell, who was a surprise winner in the long jump, Marlena Eubanks of Edwin Allen, Cardine Copeland of Wolmer’s Girls and Vere Technical’s Sherieka Jackson all scored 15 points.

Wolmer’s Girls’ Shawna Helps, the sprint double champion, and Holmwood’s Lisa Buchanan who took the 800m/1500m double, were joint Class Three champions with 18 points each with Holmwood’s Yanique Thompson third with 16 points.

Burton was unmatched in Class Four with her 27 points as Excelsior’s Jody-Ann Petrie was next with 14 points and Hydel’s Ayeshia Morgan scored 11 points.

On the Boys’ side, Calabar’s Traves Smikle, who threw a massive 66.88m to smash the National Junior and Class One records, the fourth longest ever as a junior, scored 16 points.

Bridgeport’s Jazeel Murphy, who won the Class One 100m and Munro’s Delano Williams who won the Class 1 200m, were tied on 15 points for second.

Jamaica College’s Jackson, who won the Class Two sprint double, was the top Class Two performer with 18 points followed by Calabar High’s Jorel Belfante (16) and Manchester High’s Lennox Williams third on 14.

Ohara was followed in Class Three by his teammate Dixon, who scored 18 points from wins in the 800m and 1500m, the latter in a new meet record 4:17.27 minutes. Jamaica College’s Devaughn Baker, who won the 200m and was second in the 400m and Wolmer’s Boys Jordan James, were tied on 16 points.
