Saint Cecelia poised for victory, but…

Champion sprinter Saint Cecelia looks poised to open her five-year-old win account as she takes on what appears to be five manageable rivals in the $1,188,000 Lady Geeta Trophy (Grade One) feature at Caymanas Park today.

The Graded Stakes event, three-year-olds upward is the highlight of the 11-race card and will be run over 1,200 metres at approximately 5:25 pm. First post is 12:50 pm.

Owned by Stephen A & WA Valentine Chung, this will be the second start of the season for the Spencer Chung-trained chestnut mare by Burning Marque out of She’s On Wheels (Bates Motel) bred at Ham Stables.

Saint Cecelia has failed to win a race since the Caribbean Sprint Champion success in November, and from her preparation coming into the race, looks readied with a vengeance to make amends among rivals she can beat.

The loss of her opening fixture to the smart American-bred Ron Ron on February 19 should have whetted her taste for victory in this year’s Lady Geeta Trophy, an event which she narrowly lost to the imported Honeyofalady.

In her last six races, Saint Cecelia has been beaten by three quality American talents and will face another in Double The Honey, who will likely give her most to consider. However, the four-year-old bay colt by Double Honor out of a Honeyofabunny (Northern Prospect), although been able to win two of his last three races, still appear some way off his true potential and may just fall short of expectations although he has worked quite well to face Saint Cecelia for the first time.

Previously beaten only by Ron Ron, whom he twice accounted for in their early three-year-old career, Double The Honey subsequently lost to nine-year-old Triple Account in a tight three-way photo finish over 1,000 metres straight on his four-year-old debut. Subsequent to that, he returned a month later to account for Ministerofjustice albeit narrowly over today’s trip. Dane Nelson will again ride for trainer Michael McIntosh.

Both will again be matching strides this time in Grade One company and should provide Saint Cecelia with the necessary competition to justify her top rated Grade One status. Meantime, Ministerofjustice, a six-year-old chestnut horse, is a seasoned campaigner at the level, while Double The Honey will be running in Grade One company for the very first time, but will give a very good account of himself with the claiming apprentice Richard Mairs again in the saddle.
