STGC Old Boys triumph in 2011 Ziadie Cup in Florida

The St George’s College Old Boys defeated the Jamaica College Old Boys to claim the 2011 Ziadie Cup on Saturday, March 26.

It was their sixth Ziadie Cup win since the tournament began seven years ago. The St George’s over-50 team defeated the Jamaica College over-50 team 2-0 in the Grand Masters match. In the Over-35 Masters match Jamaica College defeated St George’s College 3-2. The trophy is awarded based on an aggregate score of both matches with St George’s winning 4-3.

In the opening match the FC International Soccer Club defeated the 2010 Jamaica College soccer team 2-1. The Jamaica College team was the 2010 Triple Crown winners (Manning, Walker Cup & Olivier Shield) of high school football in Jamaica. The FC International Soccer Club is current leaders of the South Florida CASA League.

The matches were broadcast live on the radio on WAVS 1170 AM and online by Irietimes.com.

The Jamaican Alumnae ladies displayed their skills in the Grace Kennedy Remittance Services/Western Union All Girls Schools Alumni Penalty Kick-off. The St Andrew Old Girls’ Association Florida Inc emerged as the winner in the final round defeating the Camperdown High School Past Students’ Association Florida Chapter. Grace Kennedy Remittance Services/Western Union will make $100 cash donation to the winning school and $50 cash donation to the second place school.

Over 1,200 people attended the annual Ziadie Cup at the state-of-the-art for Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Florida. It was a great atmosphere as Jamaican nationals living in South Florida reunited with old classmates who travelled from around the world to the ‘True Blue’ weekend. They were treated to music, food, a penalty kick-off and three exciting soccer matches and a Ziadie Cup After-Party.

The Ziadie Cup soccer match is a part of the ‘True Blue’ weekend festivities, which included a ‘True Blue Meet and Greet’ mixer on March 25, Ziadie Cup After-Party on March 26, and a ‘True Blue’ church service on March 27.

The ‘True Blue’ weekend festivities is a joint effort between four Alumni associations — the St Andrew Old Girls’ Association Florida, Inc; the Convent of Mercy Academy ‘Alpha’ Association, Inc; the St George’s College Old Boys’ Association of Florida, Inc; and the Jamaica College Old Boys’ Association of Florida, Inc.
