Baugh, Forbes to be honoured by UTech
Orator, writer, and scholar Professor Edward Baugh and stage and screen actress and broadcaster Leonie Forbes, are set to be honoured tomorrow by the The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) through its Centre for the Arts and the Calvin McKain Library.
The programme of activities marks the third staging of the University’s Literary Festival and Cultural showcase to be held at UTech’s Papine campus.
In keeping with the festival’s objectives to promote literacy and foster a love for reading amongst students; as well as expose the wider community to the richness and diversity of Jamaica’s literary heritage, the one day event is set to begin with a two-hour workshop conducted by Professor Verene Shepherd at the College of Health Science, School of Allied Health and Nursing.
Professor Shepherd is expected to share with students from secondary and tertiary institutions her impressive body of work as a leading Historian, Educator and Author.
The day progresses with a Literary Festival at Warner’s Corner when invited students and the public are treated to readings from the work of this year’s honourees. The readings will be presented by The University of the West Indies (UWI) lecturers, Drs Erna Brodber and Sonjah Stanley-Niaah.
The event is scheduled to culminate with a celebratory tribute to the honourees in UTech’s Caribbean Sculpture Park.
This aspect of the day’s activities will showcase a blend of music, dance, and drama courtesy of the talented UTech Art and Theatre Ensemble as well as the E-Park Band, led by Peter Ahsbourne.
The literary festival is now in its third year, and has to date honoured the works of cultural icons such as Professor Rex Nettleford, Wycliffe Bennett, Trevor Rhone, Sonny Bradshaw, Albert Huie and Wayne Brown.
