Another stroll! — John Mills make it 17th straight at All-Age and Junior High Champs
DEFENDING champions John Mills stormed to their 17th consecutive title as the 32nd staging of the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS)-sponsored All-Age and Junior High Schools Athletics Championships came to an end at the National Stadium yesterday.
The defending champions made easy work of their opponents and completed their dominance with a record run in the boys’ 4×400 metres open relay, shattering the old mark of 3:36.90 minutes set by John Mills (hand time) in 2001 for a new time of 3:34.36 minutes.
Final points standing after the completion of 55 finals saw John Mills dominating the three-day Championships with a combined boys and girls scores of 584 points, over arch-rivals Windward Road, who finished second with 382 points.
The other top placings in the standing were Central Branch with 246 points in third position, followed by Louise Bennett-Cloverley 129, Cockburn Gardens 111, Calabar 81.50, Swallowfield 78, Osborne Store 66, New Day 62, Rock Hall 59, Maverley 59 and Constant Spring with 57 points.
John Mills also captured both the boys’ and girls’ sections. They scored 267.5 in the boys’ category ahead of Central Branch, 173, and Windward Road with 171 points, while in the girls’ section, they won with a total of 316.5 points from Windward Road, 211, and Louise Bennett-Cloverley with 99 points.
From the half way mark, it became evident that the Ransford Spaulding-coached John Mills would come out triumphant after the completion of the 100 metres finals in all four classes where they gained enough points to move farther away from rivals Windward Road.
Brittney Matthews of John Mills came out the Class One champion girl by winning the 100 metres in 12.60 seconds, and the 200m in a new record time of 25.42 seconds to break the old mark of 25.6 (hand time) set in 1990 by S Palmer.
Shacquille McKay of John Mills took the Class One boys champion title with wins in the 200m in 23.13 seconds, and the 400m in 50.92 seconds to break the old mark of 51.60 set by Deasione Reid in 2004.
Class Two champion girl was Shalanda Hunter of John Mills with wins in the 200m in 26.71 seconds and the 400m in 1:01.98 minutes.
Odane Watt of John Mills was adjudged the Class Two boys champion with wins in the 200m in a record time of 23.55 seconds to erase the old mark of 23.90 (hand time) set by Leroy McLean in 1999, and the 400m in 52.11 seconds.
Ginnelle Grant of John Mills was the Class Three champion girl after winning the long jump with 4.64 metres and high jump with 1.40 metres, while Aykeeme Francis of John Mills was the Class Three boys champion with wins in 200m in 24.25 seconds and the 400m in 56.45 seconds.
Ackelia Bondfield of Cockburn Gardens captured the Class Four girls title by winning the 100m in 13.95 seconds and 200m in 28.73 seconds, and Tyrese Locke the Class Four champion boy with wins in the 400m in 59.40 seconds.
Five athletes ended with 18 points for the overall Girls title, Hunter of John Mills, Bonfield of Cockburn Gardens, Grant of John Mills, Samantha Harris of John Mills and Matthews of John Mills, while three athletes from John Mills tied for the overall boys champion title, McKay, Francis and Watt.
