My Kingston – Niall Sheehy
What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
That would have to be driving in from the airport as dusk fell and being amazed by the beauty of the harbour and the mountains.
What do you miss when you are not in Kingston?
Blue Mountain coffee for breakfast.
What are your favourite home comforts?
Books, movies and red wine.
What would you do if you were elected mayor (of Kingston) for a day?
There have been some great developments in Kingston over the last few years, but I would really love to see more open spaces where people could run, walk and hang out.
Share with us the title of the last book you read.
The last book I read was The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It’s an incredibly gripping book about the bond between a father and son in a future post-apocalyptic world. Having recently become a dad myself, I found the book incredibly heart-wrenching to read — but at the same time very hard to put down.
What are your middle names?
Cornelius Joseph. I’m named after my grandfather and my dad.
And the last bit of music that stirred your soul?
Glen Hansard’s Falling Slowly from the soundtrack for the movie Once. It is very powerful and raw with emotion.
What was your last bit of retail therapy?
I got an iPad for my wife for Christmas — and now it’s already out of date.
What is your preferred beverage?
It used to be draught Guinness but now it’s a cold bottle of Red Stripe.
What are your current projects?
Sharing Flow’s suite of business applications — Columbus Business Solutions (with the most extensive network in the Caribbean and Latin America, we touch 22 countries and carry over 60 per cent of the region’s Internet traffic) will affect all aspects of business and social life in Jamaica allowing an increase in productivity, reduced cost of business travel and international calls, derived from supported videoconferencing. I am also trying to learn how to hit a golf ball straight. After 25 years playing, you would think it would be easy but I am always learning.
Which cologne are you currently splashing?
Polo by Ralph Lauren — it’s old school but that’s what I like.
What was your most memorable meal in Kingston?
Christmas Day 2010, I had some friends and family over and we cooked our first turkey together with our new son — it was fantastic.
Share some places in your black book.
The Terra Nova for a steak, Marketplace for meals with friends and nights at home for relaxation.
What is your advice to first-time visitors to Kingston?
Kingston is a great city with so much to do. Find a friend who can show you around and be sure to try everything once.
What upsets you?
Cruelty to children… we need to give every child a chance to fulfill their dreams.
