Priceless Beauty shows worth in Fontainbleu Trophy
ON a day when several favourites bit the dust, Houston Stables’ Canadian import Priceless Beauty came running on from below the distance to score a priceless victory in the $786,500-Fontainbleu Trophy feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Running among Open Allowance company for the third time in succession and going off as the 3-2 favourite, Priceless Beauty came running on four wide after turning for home under Paul Francis.
And with a mere 50.0kg, the five-year-old mare trained by Morris Powell accelerated in upper stretch to overhaul the front-runners to nail them in the glass by half-a-length ahead of the 9-5 bet, Raise A Ruckus, trained by Philip Feanny.
The close finish completed the exacta for Houston Stables. Priceless Beauty completed 1500 metres in a time of 1:34.1.
“I had expected a hard fight and got it. And it leaves me very pleased that she won on this ocassion as Classy Prospect got away from us over the same distance on February 26,” said Powell.
Burst Of Energy, a 5-2 chance and ridden by Richard Mairs, who brought the field into the lane a step ahead of another 5-2 betting option, the front running Classy Prospect under Osive Donegal, finished a head back, with Classy Prospect completing the frame in the 10-horse field.
Priceless Beauty, a five-year-old dark bay brown mare by Kafwain out of Pretoria (Great Gladiator), was bred by Spring Farm in Canada and was winning for the fifth time from 15 career starts in Jamaica. She earned $429,400 as the winner’s share for earnings of $3,376,800 lifetime.
Meanwhile, no trainer won more than one race on the 10-race card, but claiming apprentice Richard Mairs took riding honours with a double.
He had the leg up on the 14-1 shot Sheer Bliss for trainer Welsh Soutar in race six and Atrailoftears in race eight for trainer Per-John Scully.
