Tivoli boot champs Boys’ Town from Flow Cup
Defending two-time champion of the Flow Champions Cup Boys’ Town were knocked out by rivals Tivoli Gardens in a 1-0 extra time win at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Sunday night.
It took a 103rd-minute penalty from Christopher Jackson to break the deadlock after both teams battled to a 0-0 draw in normal time.
Tivoli joined St George’s SC of Portland, with the latter securing their spot with a 3-0 victory over surprise package Sandals Whitehouse in the first semi-final match-up of the South St Andrew double-header.
Both Tivoli Gardens and Boys’ Town were hunting the double of the Premier League and the Flow Champions Cup, the all-island knock-out tournament.
In the broader scheme of things, Jackson’s winner did not only end Boys’ Town’s two-year reign as national KO champions, but more importantly gave the West Kingston-based team the psychological advantage in their tight Premier League battle, which is intriguingly poised with only three points separating them with two games to go.
Apart from their understandable desire to pocket the attractive $1-million Flow Champions Cup bounty, Tivoli Gardens also wanted to send a message to their arch rival on Sunday and did so with the win.
However, it was the Red Brigade who looked likely to win the closely contested encounter as they had the larger share of possession and created more chances throughout.
Their skipper Michael Campbell, Anthony Bennett, Oneil Thompson, Renae Lloyd, Jameil Hardware, Daemion Benjamin, Romondo Johnson and Xavion Virgo were quicker to the ball than their counterparts from down the road.
In one instance, Campbell broke free on goal but in the 25th minute but watched his rasping shot tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Edsel Scott.
Tivoli responded in the 36th minute with Keammar Daley, who kicked wide after Romondo Johnson’s interception fell into his path.
Bennett also kicked wide for Boys’ Town before Jackson fired over for Tivoli.
On the resumption, Boys’ Town had a few more missed chances, most notably with Campbell skying his effort and Lloyd following up with a shot that was cleared off the line.
With the contest deadlocked at regulation time, the teams hunted the tie-breaker in the 30-minute extra time period and Tivoli benefited when referee Dave Peterkin awarded a penalty for hand ball in the 103rd minute.
The sure-footed Jackson easily beat Kirk Porter for the game’s only goal.
A minute later, Boys’ Town fell further in trouble when centre-half Wayne Ellis picked up his second yellow card for a lunging tackle on Daley, but even with a man short, Boys’ Town still managed to create chances as they sought to salvage the match.
