TEEN CHEF: Swirly Rolls
WHEN you are feeling for a sugary pastry, but cannot deal with the normal tedious baking process, then a Swirly Roll is exactly what you need. This recipe is perfect for just about any occasion and it is very easy and quick to prepare and cook. Swirly rolls can be enjoyed with whipped cream, ice cream, a cup of tea or your favourite brand of coffee.
INGREDIENTS
3 eggs
Almond extract
1 cup granulated sugar
3/4-1 cup baking flour
Strawberry pie filling or jam
PRE-COOKING METHOD
1 The sugar should be a certain texture. To obtain this texture, place the 1 cup of granulated sugar into a blender and grind it as much as possible. It should look like sieved flour afterwards.
2 Ensure the baking flour to be used is sieved (use a strainer).
3 Preheat the oven between 250º and 300ºC.
4 Grease a rectangular baking tin with butter, put grease paper in the buttered tin then use a little butter to coat the paper (a lot of butter is NOT needed here on the paper).
COOKING METHOD
1 Transfer the 3/4 cup of sugar from the blender into a bowl, add the 3 eggs and a cork of the almond extract. Mix the combined ingredients completely with an electric mixer.
2 Gradually add the flour to the mixture while stirring it in with a spoon. Mix out all the flour lumps that are seen.
3 Pour the mixture onto the grease paper in the baking tin and gently allow the mixture to spread out.
4 Bake for 15 minutes. If it starts to get very golden within 10 minutes, then it can be removed.
AFTER COOKING
1 Spread a sheet of the grease paper onto the counter or any flat surface and sprinkle the remaining sugar onto the sheet evenly.
2 Carefully invert the baking tin onto the paper. Remove the sheet of grease paper, which was on the bottom of the product and leave for about 15-20 minutes to fully cool. If there is difficulty in removing the grease paper then wait until after cooling.
3 When it has cooled enough, spread the jam or pie filling evenly.
4 Roll the product into a cylindrical shape firmly.
5 Use a knife to make circular slices one-inch thick and serve.
NB: Do not attempt without parental supervision.
