Mission basketball – Teaching seminars on for the young
SOMERTON, St James – IN a bid to spread the game to all parts of the parish, starting at the grass roots level, members of the Western Basketball Association’s Basketball Development Committee staged a one-day seminar at Somerton All-age in south St James last week.
The idea according to Galton Taylor, vice-president with responsibility for development came out of recognition of the need to start teaching the game at an early age.
“Because we see the need to start teaching the game at an earlier age group, we are therefore bringing basketball to the schools to ensure that the right mechanics and habits are enforced,” he said.
In addition to Taylor, Deon Williams (vice president Leagues), Sheldon Pearson (Committee Member Development) and Douglas Reid (assistant secretary JaBA) conducted the clinic to a group of enthusiastic students, both boys and girls.
The trip to Somerton, Taylor said, should be the first of many.
In addition to visiting schools, Taylor said a series of mini-seminars on Saturdays was also being planned. Sponsorship was being sought for the venture, he said.
