Powell, Campbell Brown to headline 100 metres
SHANGHAI, China (CMC) — Jamaicans Asafa Powell and Veronica Campbell Brown will be among the featured attractions in the 100 metres at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix on May 15.
The event is the second stop on the 14-meet IAAF Diamond League series.
Powell, the former 100m world record holder, is expected to use the Shanghai race as a key part of his build-up towards his first Diamond Race Trophy.
Injury forced the Jamaican to pull out of the Diamond League in Stockholm last August, but he returned to the track, and is gradually finding his legs.
The Shanghai race will also be a key test of whether Powell can regain the 100 world record now held by compatriot Usain Bolt.
Powell had held the record for three years before Bolt lowered the mark in New York in 2008, then later at the Olympic Games in the Chinese capital of Beijing.
On the women’s side, reigning Diamond League 100 champion Carmelita Jeter has a showdown with Campbell Brown, the two-time Olympic 200m gold medallist and 2007 world 100 champion.
Last year, they met four times and the duel ended in a 2-2 draw, so fans in this city should expect another titanic battle.
Jeter captured the Diamond League title with wins in Shanghai, Lausanne, and Monaco last year, when she ran a lifetime best of 10.64 seconds at this meet to become the second fastest woman of all-time.
