Amazing Animal Facts
WE all know that the world we live in is filled with amazing things. From amazing buildings that touch the clouds to amazing trees that have been around for centuries and amazing people that help to better the way we live and feel. Here’s an insight into five Amazing Animal Facts.
1 Did you know that some millipedes (Apheloria Virginiensis or the Kentucky Flat Millipede to be exact) are able to secrete cyanide? Study of these millipedes show that they are able to release clouds of hydrogen cyanide gas through small vents in their body. We all know that cyanide is one of the deadliest poisons around and this little critter has the ability to secrete it without being harmed. Maybe this is one bug you wouldn’t want to squash!
2 Far away in the icy waters of the Antarctic, deep below the surface live a certain species of fish called ice fish. They don’t have this name because they lack red blood cells and as a result resemble weirdly shaped blocks of frozen water. No, these fish are called ice fish because they have developed a gene imperative to their survival; they have developed proteins in their bodies that act as antifreeze so these little guys are able to keep moving no matter how cold it gets. How cool is that!
3 We all know that giraffes have really long necks right? In fact a Giraffe’s neck can grow up to 16 feet tall. Well can you guess how many bones are in that really long neck? 15, 20 maybe. If you thought any number greater than 7 you are wrong! A giraffe has the same number of bones in their necks as humans, seven, seven long bones. What would you do if you had a neck that long?
4 Elephants have great memory, but did you know that they are one of the smartest animals around? In fact the only animal smarter than the elephant is the Whale. The average IQ is 100, above that and you’re considered a genius; elephants have an average IQ of 129.74 and their brains can grow up to a whopping 11 pounds in their lifetime. Maybe size does matter.
5 Last, but definitely not least, we have the pig, they don’t excrete cyanide, aren’t able to survive extreme cold waters, don’t have really long necks they’re pretty smart but not that smart. What’s amazing about the pig is how clean they are. Pigs are very clean animals. They keep their living or eating area far from their toilets. Even piglets, only a few hours old, will leave the nest to relieve themselves. Pigs have no sweat glands, so they are much more tolerant of cold than heat. They roll around in mud to cool their skin and the layer of dried mud protects their skin from the sun.
