Cocktails With – Paula Kay Kerr-Jarrett
It’s a little after 9:00 am and attorney-at-law Paula Kay Kerr-Jarrett, BA LLM, struts into the Jamaica Pegasus hotel alongside hubby Mark to meet us for cocktails. She’s chic, as usual, and quickly settles in to share her thoughts on motherhood and a bit about herself ahead of her meetings…
What are you sipping today?
As always, nothing compares to an icy cold glass of champagne… it sets the atmosphere for fun and celebration!
Socialite or homebody?
I absolutely love people! As I say to Mark all the time, our home comes alive when it’s filled with friends… magical really! I cherish quiet time with him and the children, too. I also enjoy my own company. What can I say? I want it all!!! (Laughs)
In a sentence, who is Paula Kerr-Jarrett?
That’s a difficult one! Spiritually, I’m committed to honouring the Lord wherever possible… He has been so good to me! Emotionally, I’m sensitive but not sentimental, loyal, focused and determined… although some may call that stubborn. (Laughs)
What are your thoughts on Mother’s Day?
I have been blessed with a wonderful mother. Think strength and wisdom packaged in style and beauty…who could ask for more? I think of honouring her — as I pray my children will honour me — for doing the best she could to be a good mother… and in her case…succeeding! She never gives up!
What is the best thing about being a mum?
So many amazing things! But definitely not 0-3 years… that was Mark’s watch! (Laughs) The love notes from my daughter, the affection of my son, teaching them and watching these principles at work in their lives when they apply them! Seeing them become more independent, or should I say opinionated… I cherish that! The joy they bring when they experience something joyful for themselves… that’s got to be the best!
And the worst?
When they are hurt, whether it be a bruised knee or a bruised heart… and there is nothing you can do to make it disappear!
What were your thoughts after the birth of your first child?
We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made — Psalm 139:14.
And the second?
Where’s Mummy?
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had with your children?
Hmmm, I’ve been blessed with so many that it’s hard to choose just one. In recent times, we spent two weeks in Oxford last summer playing tennis, cycling everywhere, punting and picnicking with sushi and Marks & Sparks sandwiches… lots of time to discover each other and to just “be”.
When you’re not working, where’s the best place to find you?
At Richard’s Gym! But mind you… that’s work!!!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received on motherhood and parenting?
Choose your battles very carefully.
What personality traits do you share with your mum?
Her determination… she never, ever gives up! Impatience, too, especially if someone wants to give up! Discernment…. she understands and appreciates people, and a natural joie de vivre! Let the party begin! (Laughs)
Who or what inspires you?
The Bible… you really don’t need any other instruction. And great leaders like Mandela and Ghandi who possess incredible wisdom. They acquired a lot of that, by the way, from the Bible.
What’s in your handbag?
My iPad and iPhone, sunglasses, purse, keys, Dentyne Blast and lipgloss.
Who does your hair?
Cutting is done by a couple of people… I don’t want to create a rivalry! But I am pretty low-maintenance, give me 20 minutes and I’m out the door!
Who does your nails?
Tammy does them at home. In fact, she can do anything!
What’s your style?
Gosh! It depends on where I am… London or home… So different, isn’t it?
What’s your must-have accessory?
I’m not a big accessoriser (much to my mother’s horror), but if had to choose one thing, it would probably be earrings.
What projects are you currently working on?
About five! I am an incurable multiple-tasker! Always my children… they are constant projects in one way or the other. There’s always something new and interesting, shall we say, in the case of my 15-year-old son. And various company projects including a new and exciting it park. Of course, there’s my new foray into politics… or shall we say…”community building” (smiles). And yes… contributions are welcome and will be well-spent!
