DJ Sunshine: I fell in love with recording
IRIE FM’s DJ Sunshine has joined the list of radio jocks who have added the title recording artiste to a list of achievements that sets them apart from their contemporaries.
“I didn’t take it seriously until I met with DJ Frass one evening to expand on an idea he had for me,” she shared, adding that the entire process of creating music has always fascinated her. “I fell in love with it,” she said simply.
The presenter of Inside The Jam, an evening drive-time show aired Wednesdays to Fridays, said she toyed with the idea of going into the recording end of the business for some time, especially after friends and others who heard her deejaying kept encouraging her to take it up professionally.
But music, she acknowledged, has always in her blood, as during her childhood years she would record her favourite songs on cassettes, using them to create mixes on the family stereo set.
After leaving St Andrew High School for Girls, DJ Sunshine left Jamaica to pursue a degree in architecture at Miami Dade Community College.
However, her love for music triumphed over her interest in architecture and she returned home to work the DJ circuit where her talent was quickly recognised.
Marketing consultant Karlene Walters, who was among the people Sunshine impressed, contacted Irie FM’s Marketing Manager Brian Schmidt, who took the time out to watch DJ Sunshine play at a local hang-out.
Schmidt, too, was impressed with Sunshine’s style and introduced her to Irie FM’s owner Karl Young (now deceased) who added her to the radio station’s team in October 2001.
Her venture into recording earlier this year has so far seen her release Nuh Let Me Go, I Doh Care Anymore, Run Some Money, and Conqueror infectious singles that are undoubtedly inspired by life and its challenges.
Asked how she manages both tasks, Sunshine told Splash: “It can be very challenging, especially when it comes to managing my time. My love for the art, however, drives me to do both wholeheartedly.”
But the key, she said, is setting her goals daily, staying focussed and working diligently towards them.
Can she manage to do more, was our
next query.
“There is definitely much more on the horizon,” she responded. “Each day brings growth and I plan to learn and grow as much as possible.”
