Naggo Head claim 3rd successive title
DEFENDING champions Naggo Head swept to their third straight triumph as the curtains came down on the 31st INSPORTS/SWIZZZLE Primary Schools Athletics Championships at the National Stadium yesterday.
Naggo Head convincingly won the meet with a combined score of 225 points, followed by New Providence, who retained second position with 120.
Greater Portmore, 108; St Catherine, 92; Portsmouth, 83; Waterford, 80; Angels, 67.50; Excelsior, 63, and Belmont Park, 60, were the leading schools.
More record were broken on yesterday’s final day, with the most remarkable being the Class 3 boys 300 metres where Christopher Taylor of Ewarton erased his previous mark of 42.41 seconds set on Friday with another blistering run of 41.81.
Also going below the previous record was Andrew Ashby of Naggo Head, who was second in 42.38 seconds.
Another record to go was the boys Class 1 boys 4×100 metres relay, with New Providence clocking an impressive 49.78 seconds to break the 49.92 set by St Benedict’s in 2009.
The girls also put their names in the record book, as Rosalee Cooper of New Providence won the Class 3 150 metres in 20.09 seconds to erase the old mark of 20.20 set in 2005 by Mayah Edwards of Tarrant.
Cooper won a second gold by in the Class 3 girls 100 metres in 13.48 seconds to captue the sprint double.
The Class 3 girl 4×100 metres relay was also shattered as Portsmouth won in 56.05 seconds to remove the previous 56.11 set by St Catherine in 2009.
Meanwhile, the Class 1 boys 100 metres was won by Jevon Shaw of Waterford in a time of 12.22 seconds. Lusean Byfield of Angels won the Class 1 boys 200m final in 25.33 seconds, while Tiandra Robinson of Portsmouth won the Class 1 girls 100m final in a time of 13.09 seconds.
Tyreke Wilson of Ensom City captured the Class 2 boys sprint doubles — the 100m and 200m in 12.92 and 26.20 seconds, respectively.
The Class 1 boys 400m final was won by Nickolas Francis of Naggo Head in a time of 58.26 seconds, with Towana Allen of Greater Portmore winning the Class 1 girls 400m final in 59.88 seconds.
Roshaun Rowe of Bridgeport was the winner of the Class 3 boys 100m final in a time of 13.53, and the 150m final in 20.46 to capture the sprint double.
Derrangello Ellis of Excelsior took the sprint double for Class 2 girls — the 100m in 13.65 and the 200m in 28.29 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Class 3 girls 300 metres was won by Davia Morgan of Naggo Head in a time of 45.63 seconds.
Jeanelia Brown of Dunrobin was the winner of the Class 4 boys 60 metres final in 9.04 seconds, while the Class 4 boys 60m final was won by Tahiem Young of Alpha in 9.04 seconds.
Greater Portmore won the 4×200 metres relay Open for girls in a time of 1:50.18 seconds, with the boys 4x200m relay Open won by Waterford in a time of 1:45.58 seconds.
