Who do these Spaniards think they are?
Dear Editor,
Jamaicans and all who cherish national sovereignty should view with great dismay the news that in early 2008 Prime Minister Bruce Golding was snubbed by the Prime Minister of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who refused to meet him, because the Spanish president was upset over Jamaica’s alleged ill-treatment of Spanish hoteliers. This is according to Wikileaks.
What this tells us is that the so-called democratic countries are not always democratic and they still believe that he who pays the piper calls the tune.
The Jamaican Government had to have the Spanish hotel group, RIU, tear down a dangerous fifth floor on its MoBay construction because it was in the flight path of the Sangster International Airport. So now we are hearing that the Spanish government was angry. That means we should have left the hotel to do as it pleased, until an aviation disaster took place in Jamaica. This is preposterous!
We are a small country in need of foreign investment, but surely we can’t just lie on our backs, prostitute ourselves and allow the highest bidder to have their way with us. Columbus got away with it in the time of the Tainos. Today, we must say no to such arrogance.
