Sir Von hunts Hall Of Stakes win
VON G White’s imported four-year-old colt Sir Von will attempt another shot at winning his second race of the season when he takes on a small but competitive field of six in the $886,500 Jamaica Thoroughbred Racing Hall Of Fame Stakes Trophy at Caymanas Park today.
The Open Allowance dash over 1,200 metres for three-year-olds upward headlines an 11-race Hall Of Fame Race Day card sponsored by the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) and will be run at approximately 5:10 pm. First post at 12:15 pm.
The $715,000 Reynold ‘Ren’ Gonsalves Memorial Cup, an Open Allowance three-year-olds upward race over 2,000 metres and the divided $715,000 Leslie Mcrea Trophy maiden special weight contest for native-bred three-year-olds over 1,100, are among the important supporting events carded.
Separate and apart from all races bearing the nomenclature of Hall Of Fame induction, a Walkstacle race for the human animal put on by the JRC for charity over 200 metres straight will also be a betting feature on the programme with proceeds going to Children First, an organisation for children situated in the neighbouring Spanish Town area of St Catherine.
Conditioned for the races by Wayne DaCosta, Sir Von, a bay colt by Even Then Score out of Premier Gray (Premiership) and bred by Judy B Clemow in the USA, looks primed for an event which he has already won as a three-year-old.
Now four years old and up in class, the speedy importee is beginning to get the hang of the pace of the grade, and judging from his even running behind Brass & Sassy and Dance So Sweet over 1,000 metres straight on last, should be bang in contention when this is being decided.
No stranger to winning over the distance, Sir Von returns well trained to face old foes Brass & Sassy and fellow American-bred Dance So Sweet several kilos better off at the weights which could see him turning the tables on his recent conquerors.
But even coming in much lighter than his two main rivals is no assurance that the speedy son of Even The Score will do just that as the much improved chestnut filly Dance So Sweet has already won the event this season in a time of 1:13 minutes flat in the grade below and could improve on this.
However, should consistent showers continue to leave the racing surface at Caymanas Park wet, this could improve the winning chance of Sir Von. The hot-stepper last won the event in similar condition on October 2 last season, and with mark signs of improvement, could oblige.
Sir Von is one of three entries in the event prepared by the champion conditioner. The other two being the American-bred five-year-old bay gelded son of Delaware Township, New Kingston and Lifeisjustforliving.
Lifeisjustforliving is easily the fastest in the field, but was surprisingly beaten by Dance So Sweet and Brass & Sassy over 1,100 metres when last at the races on April 3.
The four-year-old chestnut gelded son of Region Of Merit, owned by Church Pen Farm, returns much sharper for this and being one who will also enjoy muddy conditions, has a reasonably good chance of upsetting his more fancied rivals by coming in with a comfortable 52.0kg for the 2.0kg claiming female apprentice Georgina Sergeon.
